Coconut or the Cocos nucifera belongs to the family Arecaceae (palm family). The coconut is featured in early Sanskrit writings dating from the 4th century BC. It was known as sriphala (Sanskrit: Sriphala = God's fruit). It is a symbol of prosperity fertility, usefulness, generosity and selflessness. It is associated with many Hindu rituals for example, as an offering during puja (worship) and as an essential element in weddings.
